Wildlife Trafficking Observatory DASHBOARD
This is the Wildlife Trafficking Observatory's interactive dashboard. Here, it is possible to explore information on seizures of wild animals, their parts and products, obtained from digital news reporting actions to combat wildlife trafficking.
Seizure data refers to the periodic reports published by Freeland Brasil, starting from its first edition which includes the period from 2018 to 2022. New seizure data will be added to the dashboard following every published report. The reports present analysis on wildlife trafficking for three South American countries (Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay) and indicate specially in Brazil, that the records of crimes against fauna are recurrent and have being incresing over the years.
The dashboard presents seizure records according to item categories and taxonomic groups, indicating where seizures occurred, their frequencies and also the quantities of seized items.

Seizure records
years

It is important to highlight that digital news report only part of what is seized in actions to counter wild life traffickinbg and counts of seized items are not consistently reported in the source data. Therefore, numbers on the dashboard represent the minimum values depicted from the digital media.
A geographic map displays the locations of reported seizures and indicates the relative frequency of these incidents across different regions within Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. The darker the color in the map, the higher the frequency.
Users can explore the graphics by interacting with the categories of seized items (I), the different regions on the map (II) and the respective seized quantities (III) which are classified according to the animal group and metric (U or kg). The graphics are interconnected, allowing for a dynamic exploration of the data. Additionally, users can filter the data by year and country.
Seized item categories: dead animals (slaughtered, dead, eviscerated, taxidermized); individuals (whole animals for which there is no information whether they are alive or dead); not informed (no information about seized item type). Dashboard´s graphics, particularly the geographic map, may not be supported by some browsers. Microsoft Edge browser Version 136.0.3240.50 is recommended
